Notre Dame, Obama, and Abortion

Today President Obama spoke at Notre Dame's graduation. While still an Illinois senator, Obama revealed his extreme pro-abortion agenda when he voted against a bill that would provide medical help for babies that survived late term abortions. Shortly after becoming President, he reinstated the use of US tax dollars for abortions in foreign countries and stem cell research. Even though he captured 54% of the Catholic vote his position on abortion is in direct opposition to a very basic Catholic tenant. Catholics are opposed not only to abortion but also birth control.

Obama's appearance at Notre Dame's graduation spurred some students to protest and not attend the official ceremony. The media attention grabbed the attention of devout Catholics outside the school, who organized and staged large protests. At latest count 40 people have been arrested for carrying their protest to the campus property. Among those arrested was former Presidential candidate Alan Keyes.

Several questions come to mind. Do a large percentage of Catholics believe that abortion is not really a sin even though the Vatican clearly stands in opposition to it? Has Notre Dame become a secular school? Will Notre Dame no longer be known as a Catholic school or will we see a shake up in the Notre Dame leadership?
